Detailed Description
This is a 5 day trip to Newmarket during the Easter break therefore, there will be no lectures missed.
Newmarket is known globally as the ‘historic home’ of horseracing as racehorses have been trained here for over 350 years. The town is home to around 80 racehorse trainers and at peak season there are close to 3,000 horses in training.
Today, the Newmarket Training Grounds are owned and managed by Jockey Club Estates and span 2,500 acres. Racehorses are exercised daily on the publicly available heath named ‘Warren Hill’ therefore, many flock to watch the racehorses in training. Newmarket is a town where the horse and sport of horseracing still dominate today and it boasts 2 racecourses, the famous Tattersalls, the historic Jockey Club Rooms, a new Horseracing Museum and several globally renowned studs such as, Godolphin’s Dalham Hall Stud, Cheveley Park Stud, the Jockey Club’s National Stud.
The itinerary has been planned specifically to your cohort and will be a week of action. This trip supports the learning outcomes of, and contributes to the delivery contact hours of, the Introduction to Horseracing module. There are many off-site visits which will include; an early morning trip to watch daily training of multiple yards on Warren Hill, a trip to trainers’ yard, a trip to The National Stud, a trip to Dalham Park Stud (Goldolphin), exploration of the new Horseracing Museum, a trip to watch the breeze ups and, to watch those horses go through the sales ring during an evening sales at Tattersalls.
In addition to our off-site trips, there are also several guests who have agreed to visit you at the BRS to share their industry experience, expert guidance and insights such as;
· Adrian Beaumont - International Racing Bureau
· Caroline Turnbull – The Thoroughbred Breeders Association (TBA)
· Peter Williams – BRS
· Mike Robinson – Media Training
THe BRS has fantastic facilities and the itinerary incorporates many of these. Therefore, whilst on site at the BRS, there will be classroom instruction on how to ride racehorses and practicals using the simulators and balance balls (this is fun for riders and non-riders). For those who want to, and are deemed safe riders (secure at walk/ trot & canter), there will be riding lessons where you can gain further instruction by riding real racehorses for all of the 5 days (this will be limited to a max of 12 students due to horse availability and it will also be subjected to a rider assessment at both Hartpury & at the BRS to ensure every rider is matched with a suitable horse). However, whether you ride or not, this week will involve lots of trips and speakers to provide an experience not to be missed! The BRS offers many courses however, this 5 day residential stay offers a taste of what they do to help you learn more about racing as an industry but also to help shape career ideas of your own.
Transport, accommodation and food are included in the price. The home cooked food is excellent and the BRS kitchen staff are known for their ability to tailor to complex diartary needs. If you would like to ride, you will need appropriate PPE such as a hat, boots and body protector. The BRS cannot provide these. It would also be wise to bring some trainers and sweat clothes as we have 1 x fun ‘train like a jockey fitness session’! No additional expenses are likely unless you wish to indulge in any extra refeshments/ shopping during the trips.
Hartpury subsidises the cost of the trip significantly through its partnership with the British Racing School. The student contribution is £350 financial which must be paid in two installments:
- Payment 1 of £100 has a payment deadline of Friday 14th February 2025
- Payment 2 of £250 has a payment deadline of Friday 14th March 2025
These payments are non refundable due to the payment of external organisations for this trip.
If students are unable to finance this trip themselves, you may be eligible to apply to the Study Experience Grant which may cover all, or some of the cost. Please view the ‘Undergraduate Grant & Loan’ section on this web page).
